This week's pub quiz in the local Sunday paper had a round in it entitled 'Sleepy Heads' - either the question or the answer is connected to 'sleep' so that's quite helpful in this round.

Question 6 was 'In which 1946 film did Humphrey Bogart play private eye Philip Marlowe?'

The answer is of course 'The Big Sleep'.

The Big Sleep was a Warner movie from 1946 directed by Howard Hawks, in black and white, 114 minutes long adapted from the novel by Raymond Chandler.

In it private eye Philip Marlowe is hired to protect General Sternwood's wild young daughter from her own indiscretions, and finds several murders later that he has fallen in love with her elder sister.

Lauren Bacall played Vivian Sherwood Rutledge, Dorothy Vickers was Carmen Sternwood and Dorothy Malone appeared as a Proprietress.

Humphrey DeForest Bogart was born on Christmas Day 1899 in New York City he died from cancer, aged 57 on January 14 1957 in Los Angeles California, his career began in 1921 and ended the year before he died, 1956.  He was the first child of Belmont DeForest Bogart and Maud Humphrey.  Bogart is a Dutch word meaning orchard.

Lauren Bacall known for her sultry looks and husky voice, was born Betty Joan Perske on 16 September 1924 in New York City.  She was the daughter of  Natalie Weinstein-Bacal and William Perske.  From 1945 until his death in 1957 Lauren was married to Humphrey Bogart, when they married she was 20 and he was 45.  They had two children.   In 1961 she married Jason Robards, they had one child and she divorced him in 1969.  Lauren is still alive.

I love this film. Bogie and Bacall were fantastic together in the movies and in real life.
